How to care for your tree

How to care for your Christmas tree

Real Trees require care to ensure the freshest, most fragrant tree for your home or business.  To keep a Real Tree fresh, follow the following steps:

Black Hill SpruceFresh cut

Before bringing the tree into your home, make sure there has been a “fresh cut” on the trunk of the tree. This “fresh cut” will allow the tree to draw water from the tree stand and keep the needles fresh.

Water your Real Tree

Within an hour of the “fresh cut”, get your tree in water in the stand or a bucket of water. This will keep the “fresh cut” open and able to absorb water.

Choose a location away from a direct heat source

Placing your tree next to a register or baseboard heating causes the tree to prematurely dry up.

Open up your Real TreeBaled Christmas trees

Once in water, allow the tree to fully “open up”. Most trees have been baled during shipping, which does NOT damage the tree, but rather assists in the shipping and handling of the trees. In order to “open up” your tree, allow it time to acclimate by placing it in the house or garage and unbaled. Pushing the branches down can cause them to lose their strength or break.

Secure your tree

Use a tree stand designed for the size of tree in your home.  Most retail lot operations sell high quality tree stands which will last for decades.

Check and fill water basinTree basin

Check the water level every couple of days.  Within 24 hours of putting up, most trees will absorb 1-2 pans of water.  In order to keep the fresh cut on the bottom of the tree, make sure the water level never drops below the fresh cut.

Removing the tree from your home

Most retail lots offer tree bags for sale.  Tree bags eliminate much of the clean up traditionally associated with removing the Real Tree from your home.

Properly dispose your Real Tree

Many communities offer curbside pick-up or a drop off location.  In addition, Real Trees can be recycled.  To find the nearest Real Tree recycling location, click here
