Dutchman’s landscape stock provides economic barriers to wind, privacy and noise. Follow these steps to keep your landscape stock healthy and growing:
1. Dig a hole twice the width of the container and 6–8” deeper than the root system.
2. Loosen the soil in the bottom of the hole and mix it with peat moss or compost at a one-to-one ratio.
3. Plant the tree with the ball at ground level or 1” above the ground.
4. Remove the tree from container and use a sharp knife to make 4–6 one inch deep cuts down the side and on the bottom of the root ball. Separate the circling roots and guide them downward and outward.
5. Soak each tree in water every three days throughout the summer until the temperature begins cooling down (around September). Skip watering if there is a hard rain. The trees shouldn’t need constant watering the following summer unless the ground gets really dry.
6. Fertilize the trees with 12-12-12 around each tree. Use one ounce of fertilizer for every foot of tree.
